How redaction works in FirstAboard PDF
Open the document, choose Redact, mark what has to go, check the marks, save. The removal happens on save.
Find and black out
Pick what to look for, or type a word such as a name, and every instance in the document is marked. Nine Australian patterns are built in.
Check digits, checked
Where a number has its own check digit, such as a tax file number or an ABN, the finder verifies it, so a similar-looking number is not blacked out by mistake.
Drag over anything else
Names, addresses, a signature. Drag a box and it is removed for good when you save.
Gone on save
The marks are marks only until you save. Saving deletes the text underneath; it does not cover it up.
Works on scans
A scan is a picture. Run Make Searchable first, on your own computer, and the finder can read the numbers on it.
Sanitise on save

Questions about redaction
Is drawing a black box over a number in my PDF viewer enough?
No. In most viewers the box is a shape on top of the text, so the number is still in the file and can be selected, searched or uncovered. FirstAboard PDF deletes the text underneath the box when you save.
Can it find tax file numbers for me?
Yes. Find and black out marks every tax file number in the document, and it also knows ABNs, ACNs, BSBs, Medicare numbers, passport numbers, card numbers, phone numbers and email addresses. You check the marks, then save.
Does it work on a scanned payslip?
Yes, after Make Searchable. A scan has no text to delete until it has been read, so run Make Searchable first. It runs on your own computer and adds a text layer to the original page.
Does my document leave my computer?
No. Redacting, like editing, merging, splitting, compressing and converting, runs on your computer and the file is not uploaded for any of it. No cloud account is needed.
Can I choose the colour of the box?
Yes: black, white with a thin border, seamless white, or a custom colour.
